Town of Chichester, New Hampshire
Cemetery Trustees' Meeting
May 2, 2022
The Cemetery Trustees, Ruth Hammen, Fred Shaw and Brenda Boswak met at 9:00 a.m. at the Historical Society building.
Old Business
The gate for Leavitt Cemetery is unlocked for the season. April 10, 2022, Brenda discovered damage to the grounds in Knowlton-Edgerly Cemetery. There are deep, long ruts that appear to have been created by a large, heavy vehicle driving in an area of the cemetery that is not a designated driveway. Chichester Police were notified and responded to obtain a police report. Ruthie will contact Hodgkins Maintenance crew to carry out the necessary repair. April 25 2022 , 9:00-12:00, the Cemetery Trustees along with Gordon and Marion and Wes Jones, worked together at the Perkins-Maxfield Cemetery located on Pleasant Street. A great deal of work was accomplished. Fallen trees were removed, brush and leaves and debris were removed, headstones were cleaned and repositioned and repaired. Marion Jones has compiled an extensive list of burials in this cemetery along with their genealogical information. We appreciate the hard work of all the volunteers! Thank you, Jones family! The appearance of the cemetery is significantly improved! A couple of stones need professional repairs which will be scheduled for this season. The Cemetery Trustees will schedule another date to create a diagram of the burials in this cemetery. Tim Mayville is working on locating a copy of the deed with an accurate boundary description.
New Business
Brenda will contact volunteers from the Remembrance Wreath Day to invite them to participate in placing American flags on the veterans’ gravesites in time for Memorial Day.
Ruthie has begun working on staking lots for burial requests.
Blossom Hill Cemetery notified Ruthie they have a military headstone that belongs to a citizen buried in Leavitt Cemetery. She will make the necessary arrangements for us to take possession of it and have it set at the lot.
We have had a request for information on Chichester’s requirements and procedures for “green burial”. Further discussion and information will need to be obtained before we can give an answer. As of right now, we do not have a detailed procedure. We continued our discussion on changing the paperwork from a deed to “right of interment”.
We received an estimate from Perry Bros. Monument to repair Dr. Amasa Kelley’s stone at Brown Cemetery. His stone will be the first on their schedule to repair for us.
Meeting adjourned 11:45.
Respectfully submitted,
Brenda Boswak, Cemetery Trustee, Secretary
